At The Crest Academy our Maths teachers are passionate about their subject and they deliver it with enthusiasm and rigour. Teachers in the maths department draw on a range of interactive resources to facilitate the problem solving skills and understanding required to access maths at its highest levels. We create a positive and vibrant learning environment where all students feel that they can and will succeed regardless of their starting points.
At Key Stage 3 students follow the Mastery curriculum, which means that students spend more time on fewer topics and use objects, conversations and problem solving to build their confidence and understanding.
At Key Stage 4 not only do students follow the GCSE but some at the very top are also given the opportunity to study towards gaining an additional maths qualification in Further Maths.
At Key Stage 5 we offer both AS and A2 Mathematics as well as Further Maths.
Studying Maths helps to develop skills in logical thinking and statistical or strategic knowledge, which are valued by employers across many job sectors.
From jobs directly linked to mathematical qualification such as a Statistician or Actuary to jobs in which mathematical knowledge is incredibly useful such as Engineering or Investment Banking.
The Maths department runs a range of enrichment activities. We have a Rubiks club where students are able to not only learn how to solve the cube but also improve their times. There is also an origami club and a chess team.
Trips and visits
Students in the department are currently working on producing a video about their favourite mathematician in partnership with Kings College London.
We are also applying to be part of the Count on Us Secondary Challenge which takes place at City Hall.
